how large a compressor does a 3 inch framing nailer gun need?
The answer to your question depends on if you want to shoot 1 nail into a piece of wood or if you are using the nailer in a production situation.
Even a very small compressor can produce enough pressure and volume to shoot 1 nail... but to use the nailer to actually construct something you should follow the manufacturers recommendations.
I have a 4h.p. compressor mounted on a 12 gallon tank and it keeps up with my nail gun very well. My smaller pancake compressor will operate the gun but firing time is much longer to get satisfactory results.
If you are going to use the nailer for any length of time you will want the bigger compressor and tank.
Check out the local home center and see what they have. Some places rent compressors. This would give you the opportunity to try one to see if it provides you the results you are going to need.
