Raised house draft from crawl space?
I own a house in Mobile, AL that is nearly 100 years old. The floor is raised and its construction is tongue and groove 3/4" slats across full depth 4x8's... and that's it. I get serious draft into the living area through cracks and such in the floor. I have a poly vapor barrier on the ground below but no insulation. Can I just staple (and tape the seams of) poly or nail plywood to the underside of the floor joists to reduce the air flow into the house, or would that trap moisture?
Would I not have to worry about moisture from the interior on the floor boards above the stapled poly? Wouldn't that be the same as placing poly below the insulation? I'm just playing devil's advocate... I don't really know much on the subject.
Your BEST approach to solving this problem is to:
1. Carefully seal the underside of the floor boards with heavy poly sheeting. Fit it carefully between the floor joists, and staple it every foot or so down the center [half way between the joists] to prevent sagging.
2. Then staple about every 6 inches along the edges. As much as possible, AVOID WRINKLES which will reduce the efficiency of the seal.
The poly will BOTH seal off MOST of the draft problem, AND as a bonus, will act as a vapor barrier to reduce moisture from the living area penetrating downward through the floor and wetting the insulation, which will reduce its insulating capability..
3. Then install UN-BACKED [no vapor barrier attached] fiber glass batt insulation [the thickness of the floor joist [vertical dimension] carefully fit between the joists. Try not to compress the insulation as that also reduces the insulating effect. A little compression here or there is not a serious problem, but keep the compression to a minimum.
You need someone to help by holding the insulation batts in place while you install "chicken wire" fence to the bottom edge of the joists so as to hold and keep the insulation in place.
Do NOT install ANY vapor barrier on the underside of the joists as this will trap any moister which should get in.
