Having sorted out all the things into two groups, you can then start finding the best spaces for all the things you and your child have decided to keep. Books can be put on a shelf in the closet and if you don't have one you can buy something like a cabinet or look in stores for something similar. Stores now days have lots of closet organization systems that are inexpensive and easy to install.
You might try using a basket for all your child's dirty clothes so that they are not thrown all over the room. You will then be able to know what clothes are dirty which will make it easier for you.
Using a shoe organizer can ensure that the shoes of your kids remain off the floor. If you have a separate area for keeping all your shoes like the entryway or the mudroom it will be easy for you to pick your kid's shoes from there even on busy school mornings. All these little things will help your kids to maintain their closet in an organized way.
